With just one click, you can download data via the HEM-790IT's USB connection and see graphically displayed measurements on your computer screen in seconds.

The Importance of Home Blood Pressure Monitoring

Doctors, diabetes educators, physician assistants, nurses, and other healthcare professionals all recommend home blood pressure monitoring for various reasons. Home monitoring provides your healthcare professionals with better information to understand and manage your high blood pressure. Many types of hypertension can only be detected by monitoring your blood pressure at home, including:

  • White-coat Hypertension: blood pressure reading is high in your doctor's office but lower at home
  • Masked Hypertension: blood pressure reading is low in doctor's office but higher at home

  • Morning Hypertension: blood pressure reading is higher in the morning
Additionally, many factors can affect your blood pressure, including physical exertion, emotional fluctuations, medications, and stress. So having your blood pressure monitored at a pharmacy with an in-store device after you've been shopping or walking around might not provide you with the most accurate measurement. Monitoring your blood pressure at home allows you achieve a relaxed state more easily, and it gives you the flexibility to take your measurements at various times during the day. By keeping track of your home blood pressure readings, you can provide your healthcare professional with a log of your measurements over time. This can help them evaluate the effectiveness or need for medication.

This monitor is very easy to use, it will keep track of 2 users plus guest user. The software that comes with it is easy to use and navigate through. My doctor was extremely impressed when i went to my appointment with the monitor and my laptop, number 1, to check the accuracy of the monitor and 2,look at the graffs, averages, and numbers the software provides. My doctor told me this makes it so much easier for her to prescribe the right medication that i need at this point. My next appointment, I just need to print out the information from the software to show my doctor.

Omron Blood Pressure HEM-790IT on a Mac, March 31, 2009

I use an Intel Mac Pro running OS X 10.5 as my machine of choice, but quite often the applications that I need are only available for Windows. My solution is to use VMWare Fusion.
Software:
Fusion runs the Omron Blood Pressure monitor HEM790IT software very well and the device interfaces via USB. The Omron Health Management software is fairly flexible in the way it can display the data. I find the morning, daytime, evening sorting of the pressures very useful and the frequency histograms really convey the true profile of your pressure that will be helpful for your doctor.Pressures can also be entered manually so that readings done away from home can be included in the data set.
Hardware:
The HEM790IT itself is very well made and easy to operate. A computer is not required for manual readings and every day operation. The pressure cuff is a bit large for me, but I quickly learned the proper way to secure it to my arm.

Omron HEM-790IT, March 25, 2009

This blood pressure monitor comes with PC software. The software is pretty basic, and also works with the same company's pedometer. The software will not work on a Mac, or on a PC emulator running on a Mac. It will run in Windows running on a Mac Intel machine under bootcamp. I like the device because I can read the numbers easily. Graphing capabilities are non-existent on the machine itself, although you can step back to look at numbers over the prior 7 weeks. All the graphing capabilities are done in the software, which works fine. A nice feature is that you can plug it into the wall, and are not totally dependent on batteries. It comes in a carrying case too.

Very usable, March 23, 2009
I have been using a wrist version of the BP monitor. The older unit remembers many entries, read pulse rate uniformly wrong and read a little high. I bought this unit because it uses a cuff and I hoped it would be more accurate. But mostly I wanted the ability to download to my computer. My finding is that this unit too has trouble reading my pulse rate, usually reading it too high, but the BP it finds is much lower. If it is accurate, that would be good, but I don't know yet. It consistently reads lower than the wrist unit by about 20 points (which was reading too high). I have not tried the download feature yet, but I expect it to work. The software loaded without a hitch. I also like having an a/c adapter so I can plug it in when the battery is weak. It has no way to turn it on without starting the pump running. It recognizes that the cuff is not in place and stops, but I would prefer an on button and a start/stop button. This method is hokey. Delivery of the unit was fast and in time as advertised. The user guide is hard to understand and is not well laid out. The information does seem to be there.

Instructions for Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitors
There are several easy steps to taking your blood pressure with this monitor. First of all, avoid eating, smoking, and exercising for at least 30 minutes before taking
a measurement. Remove tight-fitting clothing from your upper arm, and sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Slide your left arm through the cuff and position the cuff approximately 0.5-inches above the elbow. On the cuff you'll notice a green marker; position this marker directly over the artery on the inside of your arm. Next, secure the cuff with the Velcro material. The cuff should make direct contact with your skin, but you should be able to easily fit your index finger between the cuff and your arm.

Next, place your arm on a table so the cuff is positioned at the same level as your heart.
Place your arm on a table so that the cuff is positioned at the same level as your heart. Rest comfortably in a relaxed environment for at least 15 minutes prior to taking your blood pressure measurement. Once you feel relaxed, simply press the start button and remain still. The cuff will begin to inflate and numbers will appear on the display as the heart symbol flashes. When the measurement is complete, the cuff will deflate, and your blood pressure and pulse rate will display on the screen. If you need to stop the measurement at any time, simply press the on/off button and the monitor will immediately deflate. And remember, always consult your physician for specific information about your blood pressure.

What is IntelliSense? The IntelliSense monitor inflates the cuff to the ideal level with each use you never have to make any adjustments to select an inflation level. This is especially convenient for hypertensive users and for people with certain arrhythmia or heart disorders because their blood pressure is so likely to fluctuate. The biggest advantage of using the IntelliSense technology is a personalized inflation every time for maximum comfort
